When a situation surfaces strong feelings, take a moment to sit with the feeling and trust that it will fade and pass

Give yourself permission to lean fully into the feeling and be patient while the intensity swells and then starts to fade. Riding this wave of emotion allows your whole body to embrace the feeling completely and then let go. Each time the feeling surfaces, you ride the wave, and the wave crest becomes more and more manageable. This brings you in more control of your feelings and it leaves less baggage hanging onto your soul.

Now is the time to adjust the sails, to come up for air, and to sail like we have never sailed before

This is such a trying time for everyone around the world, our previous “normal” has become a thing of the past. Now we are all re-defining normal based on principles of social distancing, the economy, job loss, face masks, and gloves — basically its a free for all and we are all just trying to adapt as best as we can.

Negative feelings temper your enthusiasm with a dose of reality, and remind you that there are risks in everything you do

Give it a try. Sit down and think about one of the problems in your life. Really dwell on it. Think of all the reasons why it makes your hopes and dreams and goals impossible to accomplish. In your mind, let your problem put a negative slant on every aspect of your life. Then, start having some fun with it. Start with a little exaggeration. Add some melodrama, and maybe a little obscenity. Say to yourself something like, “The truth is, I can’t stand your little business venture. I hate you for even thinking of it. I thought things were fine just the way they were. I’m really too lazy to bother with all of it. I think I’ll just eat a lot of chocolate and get fat.”

While an unrealistic optimist can be somewhat annoying when you think their bright future simply can’t eventuate, they are still likely to improve your day, just by being there

Keywords: COVID-19, New Zealand, coronavirus, bubble, optimism

Given the unfortunate lack of rental optimists available to us at present (perhaps in a Level 3 scenario?), our bubble members are just going to have to harness whatever proportion of optimism we possess, brush up on our personal optimism skills, and call our optimists on a regular basis for a good dose of brightness.
