Is ‘Being Confident’ Really the Key to Success?

Confidence, gurus, self-esteem, success

Status Quo Defenders!

We’ve all seen self-improvement articles here and there, haven’t we? They’re usually associated with some handsome/pretty looking guru with a nice, mansion-owning smile. They often talk about being productive and assure us that meditation and a solid morning routine are so frickin’ important. Now, I could trash talk this type of person all day, and I’ve already made one post about them. However, today I want to primarily focus on a single question, and it’s right in the title: Is being confident really the key to success?

To me the answer seems to be mixed. Being confident probably won’t hurt you, but it’s more important to simply have the right connections. To do that, you actually don’t want to seem overly confident to people, because they’ll (probably rightly) assume you’re a stupid, endlessly self-praising asshole. However, it is true that cocky, confident people can get ahead in this world, so…

Self but not selfish / leaf shedding season 🍁🍂

Funny

Georgia Polly Taylor : Old Crohnie

Hello gang.

Hope September is bringing you happiness and peace. The full moon is creating some chaos I think. If – like myself – you are feeling frantic as hell then perhaps it’s because your inner wolf can feel the gravitational pull of that gal in the night sky. Get out there and howl. And if you think ‘George the full moon is a load of bollocks’ fair play, howl anyway it’ll make you feel fierce. We are 2/3 water after all, tides are being turned. I for one feel mentally annihilated, wahooo what a time to be alive!!!

Fuckin hold onto anything not tied down cos I have a feeling it’s going to be a bumpy one…

So the other day I was just sat having a lil check in with Georgia Taylor, haven’t had one of those in a while… self love/ self worth, and self care and…

L'épanouissement

In university, a classmate of mine once told me, “you always look like you’ve got your shit together.” I laughed, thinking that he must be joking, but he didn’t laugh with me. This guy really thought I had everything figured out. Me, the girl who had to hold cold spoons to her face before meeting him for lunch to hide the puffiness from her stress crying. Me, the one with hopelessly dark circles beneath her eyes from staying awake all night freaking out about the uncertainty of the future. That’s the me who looks like she’s got everything figured out?

Apparently so, because that wasn’t the first or last time I heard someone say that about me. Years later on my first trip to France, I met one of my husband’s co-workers, and by “met” I mean that I was too shy to speak much French and let him do…

In reality, low self-esteem affects more people than you think. Low self-esteem refers to how you feel about yourself overall. Comparing, gossiping about others, putting others first, even excessive Facebooking are all signs of low-self esteem. You may say you do these things to stay connected or because “I want to”. The truth is when one is content with themselves, they have healthy self-esteem; external validation is simply an additive, not a necessity to their lives. A person with healthy self-esteem spends the bulk of their time doing things that promote positivity within themselves and exude this in life.

Here are some typical habits which show low self esteem :

  • Saying “yes” to everything.
  • Negative self-talk or self-criticism.
  • Back down when opinions are challenged by others.
  • Being indecisive with simple decisions.
  • Fearing failure.
  • Taking constructive criticism personally.
  • Sweating the small stuff.
  • Afraid to share your opinions in a conversation.
  • Giving…

Not A Pretty Girl

going outwords & inwords

Inspired by an Ani Difranco song that I’ve refashioned and have been playing & singing lately on the guitar, here are some of the ways my “I am not a pretty girl, that is not what I do” expresses itself:

I wear the same basic outfit every day: brown pants/green shirt; my idea of hair care involves washing it 2-3 times a week (no cutting, styling, dying, or whatever else-ing most women tend to do); I wouldn’t know how to apply makeup even if I had it; the few pieces of jewelry I own were given to me by well-intentioned people who don’t know me well enough to know I will never wear it; when I’m in a bar to hear music, I’m the girl armed with a pocket notebook and pen jotting down observational notes; I own 3 pairs of shoes: crocs, snow boots, and motorcycle boots; I’m not…

Poor Self-Esteem

Now is Today

20180513_140545
The third in my trio (triad? trilogy?) of bad thoughts or beliefs which damage me. This would be damaged as in the past, plus damage as in current. The future is still a question mark.

I had called fear and sloth the dynamic duo, but upon consideration I decided that there was actually a trio made up of fear, sloth, and poor self-esteem. Or possibly poor self-esteem is the leader of the group with fear and sloth being just hench-feelings.

Now poor might be too gentle of a word. Terrible or horrible or disastrous would be much more accurate and descriptive.

Also, I question which came first, poor self-esteem or fear and sloth. Did poor self-esteem lead to fear and sloth? Did fear and sloth lead to poor self-esteem? Was it a different combination? Or did they all just appear together?

For fear is a natural human condition to help…

All of the ugly parts of me

ugly, self, self esteem, self confidence, self image, friend, friends, friendship, relationship, relationships

Katey Writes About

Are you ready to see the ugly parts of me?

All the scars that aren’t healed just yet, and the new ones that surfaced,

The cuts and bruises of my present struggles,

The horror stories of my past,

All the flaws and imperfections of this being,

The dark corners of my soul,

The deep labyrinth of my personality,

And the circles of hell in my mind.

***

Are you ready to swim the oceans of my poison?

The bite marks that defined my battles,

The burning acids that I mistook as wine,

The riptide of my emotions,

All the pain that were masked as affection,

And the leash of myself that binded me enslaved.

***

For as long as you embrace my brokenness,

And is ready to take the leap,

I will ask you to leave me be,

Unless you’ll want to see all the ugly parts of me.
