Nothing is Absolute

FRIDA

“Nothing is absolute, everything changes, everything moves, everything revolutionizes, all flies and goes.” This is life. Nothing is ever constant, relationships, people, and most importantly who you are is infinitely changing. This quote from my favorite artist, Frida Kahlo, brings me back to my college days, studying philosophy. You can “never step in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he’s not the same man”. Although this quote is from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, I felt it connected most deeply to my soul when studying Taoism.

The Philosophy of Taosim is rooted in understanding that nothing and no one belongs to you, life is ever changing, and accepting those things will bring you peace. I know it sounds universally simplistic, but it is a cryptogram when faced with the hardships of life. When I look back on the past 32 years of my existence…

LIFE, LOVE, LESSONS's avatarLIFE, LOVE, LESSONS

Get your cup of coffee in hand, it’s story time. I’ve lived a very complex life, not hard but also not a bed of roses. All my life I’ve been the “perfect kid”. I’m 23 by the way. I don’t party, don’t drink and smoke. Don’t do much risk taking either. Always been an A student, did things by the book and always carried the tittle of “perfect kid”. I was always told that I’m going to excell and do great in life, get my family out of poverty and become an example to my siblings. All my life I had that, that’s what was expected of me and I guess I did alright given the circumstances. I was always told what to do. I never allowed myself to make mistakes because I didn’t want to hurt anyone.

For a long time I did what was expected of me and…

The Pursuit of Unhappiness

happiness, illusion, pursuit of happiness, self-deceit

Doc Arnett's avatarReflections by Doc Arnett

Sometimes it occurs to me that the real issue in most, perhaps all, of my disappointments is a misinterpretation of what life is about. More specifically, about what my life is about.

God’s plan for me is not about my gratification, my achievement or my happiness; it is about bringing people to salvation. It is about advancing the gospel and building up the body of Christ, preparing and equipping us for good works. It is also about preparing us for eternity, bringing us to the fullness of the image of Christ.

Contrary to one of the illusions neatly tucked away into our Declaration of Independence, happiness is not something obtained through pursuit. It is a by-product, not a goal. The more deliberately we focus on our own happiness, the more elusive it will be. It is gained through surrender, not through overwhelming force. It is a choice, not an accomplishment.

Laugh As Much As You Can

I’ve always been someone who laughs a lot. It’s not that I force myself, it’s just that I have been brought up this way by my parents. My parents always loved to make fun of one other lightly and my father, for the longest time, has been making the stupidest dad jokes and word plays.

This grew on me and despite the fact that stupid jokes are usually looked down upon, I have kept on doing them. To this day, my favorite joke is the below foolish one:

“It’s a guy who comes into a bar and says:
‘Hey! It’s me!’
Everybody turns around… and it wasn’t him.”

Now, the reaction to this one is usually either a puzzled face due to a lack of understanding or a nice laugh. No matter the reaction, this always makes me laughs and be proud of myself for saying it.

Just thinking…

Inward Joy, Outward Expression

Happiness, Joy

eph21920's avatarStill Finding God

My sister came to Mass with us today. The parish was welcoming those who are coming into the church. The group consisted of people from young children to older adults. They were very serious as they recited their words. I’m sure they were nervous being up in front of everyone. As they processed out together, most of them still had on their serious face. However, one man was just beaming. My sister pointed him out and said how she loved his smile. He was in fact smiling from ear to ear. He was so joyful inside that it radiate in his expression. It made us smile probably others as well.

I Found God today in a beautiful expression of joy.

Avoiding outer conflict leads to inner conflict.

Conflict, most people hate it, most people try to avoid it at all costs but conflict in a way can be a productive thing, people that have the ability to disagree, to argue and to come to an agreement not only learn how to learn to deal with conflict better in the future but it also helps the two parties in conflict grow closer and understand each other better.

” Be a nice person, don’t cause trouble” we may have been told that at a young age, or tell ourselves that if we believe we are a ” good” or ” nice” person and it’s true, we shouldn’t go around causing trouble, but sometimes we can take it too far, sometimes we can feel that speaking up for what we want is causing trouble, let me explain.

I personally grew up trying to please people constantly, I always thought that…

The consequence of conditional happiness

experience, happiness, joy, mindset

thedailygemm's avatarThe Daily Gemm

It often begins with the phrase ‘I’ll be happy when…’.

I’ve done it a multitude of times. I’ve said it about grades, employment, relationships and even my weight. But I’ve come to find that when I finally get the things I’m seeking they don’t actually make me happier.

One east example is from a couple of years ago when I was unemployed and I felt like once I found a job I’d be so much happier. In the end I managed to get 2 part-time jobs yet they failed to bring the fulfillment that I had anticipated.

So then, I ended up busier than I had been before and I still had this great feeling of discontentment.
